Residential Project:
Demolition Plan

For this assignment, I recreated a provided floor plan in ¼” scale utilizing correct line weights. My clients wish to remodel their one- bedroom apartment. They want to open up the small kitchen to the living area to create
a more open-plan environment. Existing appliances will be reused but the cabinetry will be replaced. In
addition, they want the study to become a second bedroom with a closet. All doors will be replaced. All
windows will be replaced with windows the same size currently used. All demolition is shown with a dashed line. I placed the demo plan on a 11"x17" plan sheet. I made sure to include an N arrow and add dimensions of the demolition. I drew this at a 1/4" scale on a sheet of vellum.

RETIREMENT & GRADUATED CARE COMMUNITY
RESEARCH PROJECT
For this mock project, I have been hired by McBride Stephens, LLC to provide initial plans for memory care and assisted living facility at Smith Mountain Lake, they will be constructing this project over the coming years. The objective is to combine memory care with assisted living apartments. McBride Stephens, LLC requires presentations that highlight key areas of the building, demonstrate a well-conceived floor plan, and have an aesthetic that is on-trend while also appealing to the demographic they serve. This presentation will be used by them to promote the community to investors and potential residents. It was very important for the facility to be 100% ADA compliant, with an environmentally friendly design, and connection to natural light and the outdoors.
In the first two weeks of the course, I was tasked with a research paper on design
considerations for the aged & a client proposal.
After the written portion of the research project, I was tasked with doing a schematic design phase, preliminary plan, refined floor plan, concept sketches, rendered dining room & assisted living apartment plans, and poster presentations pitching the project.

To start this phase I created an adjacency matrix that includes all of the required elements of the facility assigned, along with additional amenities that I recommend. With this matrix, I added a legend in order for the clients to understand what I recommend for this facility. Utilizing the information from my adjacency matrix, I created bubble and blocking diagrams to visually plan out where the elements could be placed in the facility. The medium I used to create these diagrams was adobe photoshop/illustrator.

THIRD FLOOR

These preliminary plans are a bridge from my blocking plans, this step allowed me to refine my blocking diagrams and fix the things that didn't seem to work in the first phase. I first started out with 2 floors but decided to expand to a third floor so that the amenities, memory care, and assisted living had their own space. The medium I used for the preliminary plans was AutoCAD and Revit to create all of the walls, doors, windows, and corridors. For the labeling I used photoshop.
refined floor plans
As I revised my preliminary plans, I made the decision to go back to two floors for the facility. I made this decision because three floors were entirely too large for what was needed. There are a lot of changes that occurred through the phases as I researched more about senior living facilities and scaling. This final floor plan shows general furniture layouts for all areas. The medium I used for this floor plan was AutoCAD and Revit.
concept sketches
These are my hand-sketched ideas for the facility. I have drawn these sketches based on the type of furniture I plan to use from my FF&E. The areas shown are the reception desk, nurse's station, one of the dining areas, the library, and the outdoor patio area/garden.

MEMORY CARE DINING ROOM

I created these renderings in sketch-up. I was inspired by the theme of natural tones and materials, taking the furniture from my FF&E to develop these renderings. These will serve as the model apartment and dining areas for the marketing department.
3D MODEL FLYTHROUGH
A great tool we have as designers is modeling. Whether it's building physical scale models or modeling our designs in 3D modeling software, models are a useful way for us and our clients to visualize the design concept for their projects. I have created a 3d model of my design in sketch-up. This model helped me understand how the layout of my proposed design impacts the exterior appearance of the facility, particularly how it impacts the roofline. In making this model, I made sure to embody my vision for the facility. I poured into this model the themes and elements I had chosen from the start. My vision was to make this facility a luxurious oasis and for it to be consumed by the nature it would surround. I made sure to highlight my outdoor/garden amenity. Again, biophilia was a key factor for this project. In doing my research on assisted living facilities I read many articles about the benefits of biophilia, sustainability, and natural elements in these facilities for its residents.
final poster pages
These 24"x 36" poster boards show a cohesive message to the client's marketing team. I made sure to show all of my deliverables for the project, mentioning a design statement, key features of design, and sustainable attributes of the facility. This presentation is a 'pitch' to the clients and to show a graphically cohesive and professional proposal.
